Digital Painting and Concept Art

Digital Design Process.jpg

Anytime I start to design a new character I first start by thinking about their story. Who are they? Where are they from?  How did they grow up? What are their interests? etc... I think it's important to establish at least a couple of these things before starting the design.

During this initial planning stage I will take notes and find some references for the character I'm attempting to bring to life. With the character above you can see she is young, looks to have a carefree attitude and is interested in the motorcycle night life scene.

By adding the touch of snow you may get the feeling that she is so interested in the hobby of riding that she will continue to do so up until the last possible minute.

Custom Airbrush and Hand Painted Items

Fan Blade Process.jpg

Just like the 11x17 Illustrations, these custom painted items start with a very simple sketch to lay everything out and get the idea on paper.

If you notice, I made some slight changes from the original thumbnail to the final product. I needed Tetsuo to be larger so that he would be more imposing for this piece. This also allowed me to go into greater detail on the image.

After everything is painted and dry, I go over the piece with a clear coat to ensure the longevity of the product. Most of these custom products can take several days to finish.

11x17 Illustrations

All 11x17 Illustrations first start with a thumbnail sketch in order to figure out the composition and poses of the characters.  If commissioned for a piece I will work with the client and make a few designs/layouts for them to choose from.

After the rough design is complete I move on to sketching out the design on an 11x17 bristol board, usually with a 0.5 mechanical pencil or a 2b standard pencil.  After everything is roughed in I will go back through and make slight adjustments before finalizing my lines.

I will then proceed to add in my values; using pencil and if the image requires some grayscale markers. I save the darkest areas for last and I use an ink style brush pen.

Most of the 11x17 pieces can take anywhere from 6hrs - 10hrs depending on the subject matter and complexity.
